The structure, writing techniques, point-of-view and basically what is the style of the novel.

Clear Light of Day, written by Anita Desai is about a family and a country, the different factors that affect both and the fear of change that has taken hold of the Das familiy. The author used reflective, descriptive and expressive form of writing so that the reader can understand the type of imagery used. Cultural issuses and political conflict the novel a compelling effect, along side with the many imagery, symbols and different motif used. Desai made the readers become aware of the Old-Decaying-Delhi and the Das family who is not adamant about change but is clearly afarid to change anything about themselve and their home cause of tiome.
Anita used imagery as her way of helping the readers imagine the surroundings by using vivid images and description to the difference symbols to help bring out their significantness. She created the rose walk as a symbol of beauty but as the novel goes on it became a symbol of despair and eventually death. The rose walk also represent the old Dehli which was once beautiful but because of time it slowly faded with age. The well was used as a sign of death or for Mira Masi as a way out of suffering, Baba used the gramaphone as a sign of comfort and stability because of his fear of change. Raja used the Hyder Alis as a sign as hope for a new and better way of life.
The characters were all given their own unique personnalities that added humor, anger and suspense to the novel. Bim was known to be frank, obsolete and adamant while Tara was quite and timid (the total opposite of Bim). Rajar was famous for his stubborness, his anger and temper which always got the better of him while Baba was known as subtle. Mira Misa added charisma to the novel especially where Tara was concern. These characteristics all co-exist in the novel that shows that Anita is an expert.
Anita Desai used the novel as a way of letting the readers know of the many differnt culturel and political conflicts raging within India and the Das family. The Muslims and the Hindus were at war with each other because the Muslims wanted India to be divided. She pointed out how dangerous it would be for an Indian boy to be get caught in the crossfire, especially in Muslim terrtoriy. At that time Raja was going through an identity crisis so he depended on a Muslim to help him find his way which created a cukture clash within Raja and his family. Conflict was also raging within Tara because she didn't known what the role of a mother should be.
Clear light of Day depicts the different conflicts, changes that a family and a country had to face to become acertain of who they are. The autyhor used the differnt situations to help rebuild the love and to establish forgiveness amonst the Das family.
